What is phrasal verb

Phrasal verb is the combination of two and more separate words that make a different word and give the different meaning from the original words. For example, “Bring down” means “ make someone unhappy” is the different meaning from the words ‘bring’ and ‘down’. Phrasal verb is mostly used in english spoken and is very useful for communication. You may have seen these different words usually in movies or newspaper. So today we will discuss the most important phrasal verb used in daily routine.

How phrasal verbs are formed


Most of the phrasal verbs derived by adding some particular prepositions after the verbs , like break up, call up, deal with, come in etc are used in often times in everyone’s daily life. But there can be different prepositions with the same word. For example, when the verb ‘come’ is followed by ‘across’ that is come across which means find something unexpectedly. Similarly come back means to return to a place . The verb come is followed by prepositions like on, in , out, through, from etc. They all give the different meaning with the same word. So I hope now it has been cleared that what is phrasal verb and how it can be derived.

Phrasal verbs can also be used in past tense ,if you are talking about past events.
The most common and essential phrasal verbs are explained below.

  1. Ask For :- To request something.
    If you ask for something it means you want someone to give you something. This can be a polite request or ask for a service.

    example :-1. I always ask for extra cheej in burger .
    Or I asked for extra cheej in burger /pizza.
    2. Just because she doesn’t ask for money, doesn’t mean she doesn’t need it.
    3. You should ask for the favour if you want a job.
  2. Back up : – To give support or encouragement.
    example :- 1. He always backs up his arguments with facts.
    2. I will back up if you play for me.

    back up can also mean ” to stop or to block”.
    The truck backed up slowly .
    Back up can also mean “to copy a computer file so that it will be saved”.
    Do not forget to backup your data.
  3. Drag on :- To last longer than expected.
    example :-1. The fighting between India and Pakistan dragged on for several years.
    2. It gets worse as the months drags on.
    3. The case of the rape has dragged on for five years .
  4. Pay off :- To repay the money or something else that is owned to a person or an entity
    example :-1. Studying will pay off when you take the exam.
    2. You should not borrow the money again, your debt has not paid off yet.
    3. These 5 am mornings and hard work will pay off .
  5. Put away:- To place something where it can not be seen or isn’t in the way of other things, put aside, save, store something in an usual place.
    example :-1. Put away your phone first then study.
    2. The flower pot should be carefully put away.
    3. I told him to put away such a useless data.
    4. You can put away the bag on the table.
  6. Drop off :- Leave someone or something at a place, hand over, let off, deposit
    example :-1. Could you drop me off at the station?
    2. I always drop off my daughter to the school.

    As you know phrasal verbs can have more than one meaning . Here the other meanings of drop off is described.
    1.Drop off :- Fall asleep.
    She dropped off while watching the movie.
    2.Drop off :- Similar to fall, decrease in level or amount.
    The price has dropped off.
  7. Call in :- To request that someone come and help.
    example :-1. They call in the police for investigation after the murder.
    2. I have called in as a chief guest at your school.
    3. She immediately called in the doctor after her mother got sick.
  8. Rip off :- When someone asks for a price for something that is too high , Something that costs a lot more than sounds, steal or cheats.
    example :-1. I can’t believe she ripped off my song.
    2. The shopkeeper ripped me off when I bought lemons.
    3. I found the price of the shirt to be a total rip off.
  9. Sneak out :- To leave a place without being noticed.
    example :- 1.He sneaked out of the classroom because he found the lecture boring.
    2. I sneaked out of the home , I wanted to go to play football.
    3. I had an another meeting at 1 pm so I sneaked out of the lunch meeting.
  10. Take off :- Start to fly, lift off, leave the ground,
    example :- The flight will take off in a minute.

    Take off :- To remove an item of clothing from your body
    example :- She took off her scarf.
    She took her scarf off.
  11. put together :- To assemble or connect the parts of something.
    example :- This soap is very simple to put together.
    Those woods are hard to put together.
  12. Lift up :- To raise someone to a higher level.
    example :- They want us to lift up our heads very high.
    Never try to lift up a horse’s foot.
  13. Make fun of :- To laugh at/ make jokes about.
    example :- Do not make fun of me.
  14. Carry on :- To continue
    example :- Sorry if I disturb you, you can carry on.
  15. Deal with :- To handle , take care of problems or situation
    example :- He fairly deals with his customers.
  16. Doze off :- To go to sleep unintentionally
    example :- She dozed off while studying.
  17. Pull off :- To succeed in doing something difficult or tricky
    example :- The players were upset when they failed to pull off their highly strategic tactic.
  18. Throw up :- To vomit or puke
    example :- Whenever jitendra takes over diet after exercising he throws up.
  19. Turn over :- To move an object so that the part that is on top becomes the bottom and vice versa.
    example :- The smell made my stomach turn over and made me feel sick.
  20. Wipe off :- To completely remove or clean something
    example :- He wiped the table off. You should wipe off the sweat .
